22:14Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.

BLESSED are those who WASH their ROBES, that they

We, again, see the use of ROBES (Revelation 6:11, Revelation 7:9, Revelation 7:13, and Revelation 7:14) to describe the inhabitants of THE CITY. White ROBES, in particular, denote righteousness or a right-standing with God. The only way to God is through Jesus Christ (John 14:1-6-11). Thus it is implied that the WASHing of their ROBES is done in His Blood. What an awesome thought!

  1. may have the RIGHT to the TREE of LIFE, and

Because of Adam and Eve, all mankind have been barred from the TREE of LIFE (Genesis 3:22-24). But those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior (or WASHed their ROBES) have the RIGHT not just a privilege but the RIGHT to the TREE of LIFE. In our present world, we are so separated from God by our sinful state that we can't even conceptualize what it means to eat from the TREE of LIFE. I, for one, am looking forward to what that fruit tastes like.

  2. may ENTER by the GATES INTO THE CITY.

THE CITY is the one described in Revelation 21:10-Revelation 22:5. As discussed in Revelation 21:12, these are GATE of RIGHTEOUSNESS, and it is easy to understand that only those who WASH their ROBES are permitted to ENTER through the GATES. Once inside, they have access to the TREE of LIFE (verse 2) and their own eternal home(s) (verse 3).

This verse describes the HAVEs. The next verse describes the HAVE NOTs.
